A new heat wave, the third one during this summer, is sweeping across Greece since Tuesday July 26th and is expected to reach its peak temperatures between this day and Tuesday, August 3rd. A mass swarm of air from North Africa is causing a significant rise in temperature. Maximum temperatures reached 40°C on Tuesday in the inland region of Epirus, 41°C on Wednesday in western-Central Greece, and are expected to continue rising today reaching a maximum of 41-42°C in western-Central Greece. Temperatures are expected to reach as high as 43 °C in some mainland areas of Greece. This new heat wave is highly reminiscent of the heat wave of 1987 that caused .1300 deaths. Moreover, night temperatures are not expected to fall below 25°C and this reduces the human body’s chance to cool down during the night and cope with the effects of heat stress. These phenomena still remain the cause of much worry about the future that may lie ahead.
