Municipality of Thessaloniki

The Municipality of Thessaloniki has a population of 325,000 inhabitants, whereas the population of the metropolitan area is estimated at 1,100,000.  Thessaloniki has the largest youth population of any city in Greece, thanks to its wealth of learning, academic institutions (approximately 150,000 students) and vibrant nightlife. The city was the European Cultural Capital in 1997 and the European Youth Capital in 2014.

In 2014, Thessaloniki was selected as part of the second cohort of cities to join the 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) network. The aim of this initiative is to assist the city in being inclusive; locally oriented but with international partnerships and exchanges; and looking forward to addressing interrelated challenges, goals, targets and actions. Additionally, the city wants to be an organisation that guarantees the well-being of its people, and nurtures its human talent, while strengthening its urban economy and respecting its natural resources.

The Municipality of Thessaloniki operates a well equipped Monitoring Network for air pollution and meteorological parameters, which consists of six air pollution stations and eight meteorological stations, distributed within the area of the Municipality. In addition, the Municipality of Thessaloniki has an approved SEAP by the Municipal Council since 2014 and in 2017 adopted the commitments of the New Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. Since then is trying to transform its SEAP to a SECAP, and hopefully, the participation of the Municipality in the LIFE ASTI project will assist towards this transformation.
